A short trip to Sydney

Posted in Uncategorized by Alex Daye on August 12, 2009

A newly discovered perk of living in Hong Kong: how close we are to Sydney. Sure, it’s a ten hour flight, but there’s a mere two hour time difference between the two cities, so jet lag is not an issue, and due to a handy little thing called the equator, those ten hours will carry you into an entirely new season. Ellis and I had the privilege last week to attend the 50th anniversary party for Australian Vogue, which in addition to being a very glamourous diversion from the work week, was a most welcome shot of winter – and Sydney winter is no ordinary winter- dead in the middle of a soggy, limpid Hong Kong summer. What’s more, the party was black tie, and let me tell you, nothing makes a man feel dandier than wearing a tuxedo!

Our dear friend Paul Meany, ex- art director of the magazine, who made the trip from New York the night before and managed to outlast all the rest of us- if you could bottle and sell that stamina, you’d be a rich man indeed…

Ellis looking very handsome in his floppy bow-tie…

Our gracious host James Dignan and his lovely date Melissa ham it up for the camera like a couple of very stylish teenagers going to prom…

Something tells me that the folks at Vogue should have ordered a bit more food…

But then, how often does one have the chance to pose in front of a Vogue backdrop in a tuxedo with a glass of champers? (that’s a j.a.daye tuxedo on yours truly, available through our website.)
