Fashions Elegant Look
In what must be a good omen, I literally tripped over a stack of illustrated guides to custom tailored clothing from the mid-seventies to the late eighties. The folios were published for Gene and Stuart Felman’s Hong Kong Custom Tailors at 1331 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, and are, I can’t help thinking, something like the pre-internet version of jadaye.com. Stuart Felman, who still runs his Hong Kong custom tailors in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, was a retired insurance salesman who’d had some suits made here and was so impressed he decided to make a buisiness of it. He opened a workroom here in Hong Kong and a store front in the US. In 1966. That would be 43 years ago. Interestingly, it is not the business model which I find so inspiring, but the style. We’ve always been very influenced by the late 1970s, and this little gift from the old woman who sells other people’s rubbish from the stairwell of her apartment building (well, not really a gift- I paid HKD 100 for 15 of them, or less than one US dollar a piece) was just the boost I needed after a rather challenging couple of weeks. Let’s just hope someone is still writing about our Moustache in 2052!
